Backgammon - Skill or Luck?

Many players really want to know if the game of backgammon is a game of skill or luck. There are people with strong believe that backgammon is won mostly by lucky players. Because rolling the dice on the board is one way to prove, it's based on luck.

We can’t deny the fact that many strategies play a lot on a player's luck. For example, a backgammon blitz at times begins when a player makes a lucky double roll and begins hitting enemy checkers at will. Thus sending those checkers to the bar while taking good positions.

Another strategy that depends on luck is the back game. Where one player is really behind and waits on lady luck to smile on him so the opponent makes a bad roll, opens up, makes a blot, facilitating a good hit. In any case that may save the game.

But many other backgammon enthusiast claims that backgammon involves large numbers of strategies and calculation like chess and hence it is a game of skill and can be won by players with the best skills and strategies.

According to this community, there are 36 different dice combinations in backgammon. Even if you are so lucky to roll 6's one after another, who can say how to select the ultimate, most beneficial move on each and every roll? If you got some knowledge, practice ( by playing for some time) and calculating the risk your move carries, there are more chances of winning game.

In the eye of law backgammon has been declared game of skill and not a game of chance or luck. In 1982, Ted Barr, a famous tournament director of backgammon games, was arrested of endorsing gambling ( backgammon for money). But the presiding judge (Oregon court) of the case pronounced in his verdict that 'backgammon was a game that needed skill and was not merely based on chance'.

Now, Is backgammon closer to strategy games such as chess and bridge or is it more related to dice games or luck? The answer is simple: the closer the players are in ability, the more luck there is. A good skill and a strategy that works well combined with luck is a sure way of winning more than losing.

Most casino games needs both luck as well as skills to win game of backgammon. First, you need a solid strategy for your moves and also some luck to hit the dice with the right numbers. A skillful player can deal with his or her opponent in the right way that makes the situation favor to him or her. A player can also make use of the rules to his or her advantage as per his knowledge and skills.

However, only a skillful player does not guarantee you that you will win all the time. There will be sometime period of bad luck of course. These tough times might come more often than you expect. But this does not mean that your skill is not useful. Of course skills are useful and essential, but if you are losing it only means one thing, you are in a streak of bad luck at this time.

In other words, with lady luck in your favor you can occasionally throw good rolls but without any skill, information, knowledge, experience and tactical play of a skilled backgammon player, you can’t survive for long.

The conclusion is that yes, there is luck in backgammon, but in the long run, skill wins out. In the short run, anyone can win, and that’s one of the things that makes the game more fun.
