Backgammon Glossary- Key terms

Here is the backgammon terminology that includes some very important backgammon terms.

Ace Point: The one point or first point in the home board of a player.

Anchor: Refers to a point occupied by two or more checkers.

Bar: The dividing line in the middle of a backgammon set, where checkers that have been 'hit' stay until they re-enter the game.

Bear in: Bringing one or more checkers into your home board.

Bear off: Removing checkers from the home board.

Beaver: A doubling rule according to which the person who is offered a double can redouble and keep control of the cube at the same time.

Blitz: refers to an attacking strategy in which the player hits the opponent’s isolated checkers.

Blot: An isolated checker which can be captured by the opponent.

Cover: Adding a second checker to an isolated checker to establish a block.

Crawford Rule: Used only in match play, according to this rule, when a player reaches a score in which he is only one point away from winning the game, his opponent is not allowed to double in the next game.

Doubling Cube: A six-sided die which is numbered 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 on its faces and used to double the stakes of the current game.

Double: Obtaining two identical numbers when rolling two dice.

Flunk: Failing to re-enter one or more checkers into the game because neither of the numbers thrown makes it possible.

Gammon: A game in which the loser fails to bear off any checkers from his home board and the winner gets twice the value of the doubling cube.

Hit: To place one or more checkers on a point occupied by an isolated checker of the opponent.

Jacoby Rule: A rule according to which gammons and backgammons are counted only as a single point if neither of the players offers a double during the game.

Pass or Drop: Refusing a double proposed by the opponent. The game ends here and the player who drops out loses the original stake of the game.

Slot: Placing a single checker on a point with the aim to form a block on next turn.

Split: Separating two checkers which form a block in order to leave two blots.
